D. 22:66-23:25 ILLEGAL TRIAL AND SENTENCING OF JESUS
1. 22:66-71 SANHEDRIN SEEKS EVIDENCE AGAINST JESUS
a. 22:66-67a SANHEDRIN CHALLENGES JESUS

And when it was day, the eldership of the people were gathered, both chief priests and scribes;
kai aPEga-gon auTON eis to suNEdri-on [4192]auTON, LEgon-tes, Ei su ei ho ChrisTOS, eiPON heMIN.
and they led him away to their :Sanhedrin, saying, 67a If you are the Christ, tell us.
b. 22:67b-68 JESUS' REPLY
EIpen de auTOIS, E-AN huMIN EIpo, ou mepiSTEUse-te:
But he said to them, If I tell you, you will in no wise believe:
eAN de e-roTEso, ou mea-po-kriTHEte.
68and if I ask, you will in no wise answer.
c. 22:69 But from :now on shall the Son of :man be seated at theright handof the power of :God.

d. 22:70a And all said, Are you then the Son of :God?

f. 22:71 SANHEDRIN DISPENSES WITH FURTHER WITNESS

And they said, What further need have we of witness?

for we ourselves have heard from his own :mouth.
2. 23:1-12 PILATE AND HEROD QUESTION JESUS
a. 23:1 And the whole multitude of them rose up, andbrought him before :Pilate.
Kai a-naSTAN HApan to PLEthos auTON, Ega-gon auTON ePI ton PeiLAton.
b. 23:2 ACCUSATION BEFORE PILATE
ERxan-to de ka-te-goREIN [2723]auTOU, LEgon-tes,
And they began to accuse him, saying,
TOUton HEUra-men di-aSTREphon-ta [1294] to ETHnos heMON,
We found this manperverting our :nation,
kai koLUon-ta [2967] PHOrous [5411] KAIsa-ri diDOnai, kai LEgon-ta hauTON ChrisTON ba-siLEa EInai.
and forbidding to give tributes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ a king.
c. 23:3a And :Pilate asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews?

e. 23:4 PILATE CLEARS JESUS
ho de PeiLAtos EIpen pros tous ar-chi-eREIS kai tous OCHlous,
And :Pilate said unto the chief priests and the crowds,
OuDEN heuRIsko AIti-on [158] en to anTHROpo TOUto.
I find no fault in this :man.
f. 23:5 INCREASED JEWISH ACCUSATIONS
hoi de ePIschu-on [2001], LEgon-tes [HOti], A-naSEIei [383] ton laON, diDAskon kath' HOles tes IouDAIas,
But they were the more urgent, saying [that], He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all :Judea,
kai arXAme-nos aPO tes Ga-liLAIas HEos HOde.
and beginning from :Galilee even unto here.
g. 23:6 But when Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man is a Galilean.

h. 23:7 PILATE TURNS JESUS OVER TO HEROD
kai e-pigNOUS HOti ek tes e-xouSIas HeROdou esTIN, aNEpem-psen [375] auTON pros HeROden,
And when he knew that he was of the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent him back to Herod,
ONta kai auTON en Ie-ro-soLUmois en TAUtais tais heMErais.
who himself also was at Jerusalem in these :days.
i. 23:8 HEROD PLEASED TO RECEIVE JESUS
Ho de HeROdes iDON ton IeSOUN, eCHAre [5463] LIan [3029]:
Now when Herod saw :Jesus, he was exceeding glad:
en gar ex hi-kaNON CHROnon THElon iDEIN auTON, diA to a-kouEIN peRI auTOU;
for he was of a long time desirous to see him, because he had :heard concerning him;

and he hoped to see some sign done by him.
j. 23:9 And he questioned him in many words; but HE answered him nothing.

k. 23:10 And the chief priests and the scribes stood, vehemently accusing him.

l. 23:11 HEROD MOCKS JESUS AND RETURNS HIM TO PILATE
e-xou-theNEsas [1848] de auTON ho HeROdes sun tois straTEUma-sin auTOU, kai emPAIxas [1702],
And Herod with his soldiers set him at naught, and mocked,
pe-ri-baLON esTHEta lamPRAN [2986] aNEpem-psen auTON to PeiLAto.
and arrayed in gorgeous apparel sent him back to :Pilate.
m. 23:12 HEROD'S RECONCILIATION WITH PILATE
eGEnon-ta de PHIloi HO te HeROdes kai ho PeiLAtos en auTE te heMEra met' alLElon:
And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day:
pro-uPERchon [4391] gar en ECHthra [2189] ONtes pros auTOUS.
for before they were at enmity between themselves.
3. 23:13-25 PILATE YIELDS TO WILL OF JEWS CONCERNING JESUS
a. 23:13-15 PILATE AGAIN CLEARS JESUS
PeiLAtos de sun-ka-leSAme-nos tous ar-chi-eREIS kai tous ARchon-tas kai ton laON, EIpen pros auTOUS,
And Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14andsaid unto them,
Pro-seNEGkaTE moi ton ANthro-pon TOUton, hos a-poSTREphon-ta [654] ton laON: kai iDOU, eGO,
You brought me this :man, as perverting the people: and lo, I,
eNOpi-on huMON a-naKRInas [350], ouTHEN HEUron en to anTHROpo TOUto AIti-on
having examined him before you, found no fault in this :man
hon ka-te-goREIte [2723] kat' auTOU:
touching those thingsof which you accuse him:
all' ouDE HeROdes: aNEpem-psen gar auTON pros huMAS;
15no, nor yet Herod: for he sent him back unto us;
kai iDOU, ouDEN Axi-on thaNAtou esTIN pe-pragMEnon auTO.
and lo, nothing worthy of death has been done by him.
b. 23:16 I will therefore chastise him, andrelease him.

c. 23:18-19 BARABBAS DEMANDED

But they cried out all together, saying, Away withthis man, and release to us :Barabbas:-

19who for a certain insurrection made in the city, and for murder, was cast into :prison.
d. 23:20-21 CONFLICT BETWEEN PILATE AND JEWISH LEADERS

And :Pilate called to them again, desiring to release :Jesus;

21but they shouted, saying, Crucify, crucify him.
e. 23:22 THIRD TIME PILATE CLEARS JESUS
ho de TRIton EIpen pros auTOUS, Ti gar kaKON ePOIe-sen HOUtos? ouDEN AIti-on thaNAtou HEUron
And he said unto them a third time, Why, what evil has this mandone? I have found no cause of death

in him: I will therefore chastise andrelease him.
f. 23:23a But they were urgent with loud voices, asking that he be crucified.

g. 23:23b And their :voices prevailed. kai kaTIschu-on [2729]hai phoNAI auTON.
h. 23:24 And Pilate gave sentence thatwhat they asked be done.

i. 23:25 BARABBAS RELEASED - JESUS TURNED OVER
aPElu-sen de ton diA STAsin kai PHOnon
And he released him that for insurrection and murder
be-bleMEnon eis phu-laKEN, hon eGOUNto; ton de IeSOUN paREdo-ken to theLEma-ti auTON.
had been cast into prison, whom they asked for; but :Jesus he delivered up to their :will.
NOTE: (2010-12-29) - 22:66-71 - The Sanhedrin was notseeking justice for Jesus - but condemnation. Subterfuge, lies, illegal proceedings - whatever it took, they were determined to eliminate Jesus. Pilate was right. It was for envythat the Jewish leaders sought Jesus' death.
23:1-12 - Both Pilate and Herod question Jesus, and neitherfound Him worthy of death. Three times Pilate declared His innocence - both to the Jewish leaders and the crowds. They neither wanted to hear such words. His death through crucifixion was alone in their minds. The Holy Spirit through Luke felt it worth mentioning that the enmity up to that point between Herod and Pilate was healed that day, so that they became friends. The people's choice of Barabbas, a criminal and a murderer - shows how lacking in justice all concerned with the death of Jesus - truly were.
23:13-25 - It puts the Roman governor in a bad light. He allowed the wishes of the Jewish leaders and people to forsake justice, and join them in letting them have their way. Loud voices prevailed over true justice! What a travesty! But the God who makes all things work together for good - allowed this travesty to work Redemption through Jesus for the human race. J.A.W.
